Saguaro LakeJust Northeast of Mesa ArizonaSaguaro Lake, located to the east of Mesa, Arizona is the closest one of the four lakes formed from the Salt River Water Project. The Stewart Mountain Dam, constructed on the lower Salt River, is responsible for the creation of this serpentine lake, situated next to the smaller Canyon Lake. It is no wonder why this lake is the most popular of the four. Gorgeous red and yellow cliffs tower above the lake’s water, dazzling tourists and local residents alike with their magnificence. The lake meanders along ten miles, providing over twenty miles of shoreline for the pleasure seeker. The Saguaro del Norte Recreation site, located at the northern side of the lake, provides picnic facilities, restrooms, first aid station, boating facilities, and a restaurant. Rowboats are available for the pleasure of a self-powered boating exploration of the many nooks and crannies provided by the lake. Motorboats, on the other hand, provide a racier and louder version for the boating fan who enjoys water spray and the rush of the wind. Visitors can enjoy the dramatic canyon walls, the scenic desert beauty, and the sightings of natural wildlife from the luxury of the Desert Belle Paddleboat. Covered decks provide protection from the sun, while ninety-minute information packed sessions dazzle any tourist or resident that happens along this pleasure vessel. Private cruises offer the unique opportunity for celebrating special occasions with a choice of hiring a caterer or providing your own delectables. The Saguaro Lake offers a variety of fish for the angling pleasure of experienced and even non-experienced fishermen. Channel catfish, rainbow trout, brown trout, crappie, largemouth bass, yellow bass, small mouth bass, walleye, and bluegill are plentiful since the Arizona Game and Fish Department stocks this lake, as well as all of the other lakes in the Salt River Water Project. The Saguaro Lake Marina, surrounded by mini-coves, sandy beaches, boating ramps, recreation sites, and camping sites offers a little bit of fun in the sun for everyone. The Butcher Jones Beach, the largest of the beaches, offers picnic facilities, swimming, and restrooms on a daily basis from April through September. This beach is easily accessible from the road and lies a bit to the north of Saguaro del Norte. Camping on Saguaro Lake, at the Bagley Flat Campground, is available by boat only along a narrow finger of the lake. Due to the secluded location and the availability of only a few camping spots, this scenic location offers a peaceful commune with nature. Nearby Canyon Lake, however, provides additional camping at the Canyon Lake Marina and Campground or the Tortilla Campground. Nearby, along the Bush Highway, lies the Saguaro Lake Ranch Resort. A lush alternative to camping, this resort offers rustic ranchettes that provide ambience, comfort, and scenic views. Real estate, in nearby communities, offer ample opportunity for relocation and the purchase of a new home. Living so close to such a beautiful lake would almost be like living with nature- sun, water, scenic vistas, and fun. Saguaro Lake...another reason to make Mesa, Arizona your new home.
